Sifting and separating grain and seeds.-Relates to a combined dressing, winnowing, and screening machine adapted for treating beans, oats, barley, &c., and especially for treating wheat. The grain &c. is fed from a hopper D1 by an adjustable valve to the screening-box U, which consists of a casing suspended at one end by chains Y and pivoted at the other on a supporting-pin b. The box U is oscillated by means of a crank on the shaft R. The sides of the box are formed with grooves to receive four sifting-trays c, which can be locked in place by a single turn-button or rod e as shown in Fig. 4. The material tailing over the third sieve at the chute k is deposited between the boards l and m. The good grain passes over a board to the middle of the fourth screen, which serves only to remove fine particles and seeds. The grain tailing over from the fourth screen is caught by an adjustable board q, and passes over the board u to a screen v. A current of air from the fan N removes chaff and dust from the good grain and also from the tailings from the third sieve, the chaff being blown out of the machine behind the rearmost board l1. The screen v is shown in Fig. 6. It consists of a pair of zinc sheets z placed one above the other. Each sheet is perforated partly with elongated slots 1 and partly with holes 2. The upper sheet is adjustable on the lower one by means of a screwed shaft 7, so as to vary the effective size of the perforations. The screen terminates in boarding 8, which conducts the grain from the machine. Chains x secured to an airdirecting board t support the screen v at its forward end, and it receives an oscillating movement from the hox U by means of the loop or stirrup w.
