Indicating at a distance electrically ; indicating races; speed indicators.-Relates to means for recording, indicating, and signalling the time occupied by a moving body or bodies in travelling from one place to another, and where two or more bodies, such as horses, are racing between such places, in means for signalling the name, mark, colour, or number of the winner or quickest and subsequent bodies as they complete the distance. Applied to horseracing, the start is notified on the course or at a distance by electric bells at various places, and the start mechanisms of stop dials, clocks, or watches M, Fig. 2, are pressed by the actuation of the electromagnets m1, by the automatic switching on of a current of electricity when lifting or moving the starting-gate, or dropping a flag or firing a pistol. The finish is notified or determined by arranging a switch board or boards or keys, Fig. 10, in the judge's box or other place, whereby an electrical circuit may be completed so as to stop the dials, clocks, &c. giving the race times, and to complete a further circuit to operate the electromagnets m1, Fig. 4, for releasing and exposing the weighted semaphores R. A number of indicating semaphores R are arranged on a common spindle p, and the semaphore raised is determined by the button or key 1 ... 7 depressed in the switchboard. When a permanent time record is required, a detachable paper dial having a free hand is placed over the face of a clock M, and a projecting piece on the main hand of the clock carries round the free hand until the finish of the race. If a starting-flag is employed, it is fitted with a sliding switch weight, and if a pistol is employed, one terminal is connected to the hammer while the other terminal is connected to the detonator or other part. For yacht races and the like where it is not convenient to use line wires in the electric circuits, wireless or ethereal conduction with suitable transmitting and receiving mechanisms may be employed. The installation may be arranged and worked at a distance, as in a theatre, to represent the actual race.
