3090. Goodall, G. J. Feb. 10. Motor road vehicles.-Relates to cam mechanism for operating clutches of change and reversing gears for motor cars &c. Figs. 1 and 3 show the mechanism arranged for three speeds and a reverse. The wheels c2, c3, c4, c5 are driven continuously, the wheel c2 in the reverse direction, and the wheels c3, c4, c5 forwards at different speeds. The clutches l, m slide on feathers on the driven shaft c and engage the clutch parts e, f, g, h on the gear wheels. The straps l1, m1 surrounding the clutches are fixed to rods l2, m2 which rest on bearing- surfaces y and engage cam-slots n', o2 in discs n, o. The discs n, o are toothed and are geared together by the intermediate wheels q. The discs n are rotated by toothed sectors s engaging the wheels s2. The toothed sectors are carried by a shaft r which can be moved by the hand or foot of the driver. By successive movements of the shaft r, the clutches can be engaged in succession, or all can be disengaged. In the arrangement shown, in changing from the slow speed to the high speed, the intermediate speed is brought into gear temporarily. Any number of clutches may be operated by camdiscs geared together so as to rotate simultaneously
