7639. Hindley, S. April 2. Electric tramways &c. on the overhead system. Collectors.-Relates to trolleys used on electric tramcars and like vehicles and has for its object to cause the trolley pole automatically to take up a safe position along the line of travel when the trolley wheel leaves the wire. Fig. 1 shows a sectional side elevation of the arrangement. The link H is connected at its upper end to the short arm I of the rolley pole J and at its lower end to the tube G. This tube has inclined projections d at its upper end, which can actuate a sliding block K shown enlarged in Figs. 3 and 4. This block K moves in a cylindrical piece B, which is fixed to the tube D and can move vertically. when the block K is not pressed back into the recess a. The usual spring is placed between the block B and a pin F fixed to the end of the tube G and passing through a slot 0 in the tube D. At the end of the tube D is fastened a block L' made in the form of two helical wedges, which, when the tube D is raised, move so as to fit into two similar fixed wedges L. When the trolley wheel leaves the wire, the link H is pulled down by the spring, thus drawing the block K out of the recess a, when the block B, tubes D, G, and all their connections move upwards until the two sets of wedges L, L1 meet and rotate the trolley until it comes into a safe position in the line of travel. The mechanism is re-adjusted by forcing the link at the bottom downwards by means of a hand-lever passed through this link and suitably placed openings in the standard.
