Furnaces for gold &c.-A furnace for separating gold, silver, platinum, or other precious metals from the sweepings of jewellers' warehouses, photographers' waste, and the like, comprises a chamber b, lined with refractory material b1, surrounded by masonry, and having an inclined bottom. The materials to be treated are introduced, with lead and other suitable fluxes with which the precious metals combine when melted, into the furnace through an opening e, having a suspended balanced door f at one side, or through a similar door which may be at the other side. A jet of burning mineral-oil vapour, mixed with air, is injected by means of a nozzle o through an opening c at the front of the furnace, and in striking the curved back of the chamber b is deflected upon the materials under treatment. The products of combustion escape through flues j, l, m to the chimney k, and the melted contents of the furnace escape through openings h, i, of which the opening h allows for the escape of slag, and the opening i for the mixed metals, which are afterwards separated by cupellation or some other well-known method.
