Electric railways and tramways. -Relates to systems of distribution in which a distant point is supplied with a current at a higher potential through an auxiliary feeder from an auxiliary machine. The main current is divided, and one part passed through the field, and the other part through the armature, of the auxiliary machine. A switch may also be provided to introduce a resistance when there is a back-flow of current from the distant point to a nearer load. The Figure shows the arrangement as applied to an electric railway. The current from the main generator a passes through the field b of the auxiliary machine to the line g at the point c, and through the arma. ture d to the distant point f through the feeder e. In the feeder is arranged the switch i controlling a resistance m. The contact q is connected to the cores o, p. On the core o are coils in series with the feeder e. On the core p is a coil l connected between the feeder e and the distant section of the line g, and a coil n connected to the nearer section. With the load as shown, the coils l, n assist one another, and the resistance m is short-circuited. When the car is moved to the left, the coils are in opposition, and the resistance is introduced, the core o being drawn within its coils. The coil s may be connected to earth or to the line. The switch i may be arranged to vary gradually the resistance proportionally to the current flow, and also to cut off the feeder e entirely.
