9099. Carter, W., and Hodgson, E. May 1. Drawing. - The drums of a continuous wire - drawing machine are driven through differential gearing so arranged that, if the speed of any one drum is retarded, that of each of the succeeding drums is correspondinglyaccelerated. The main driving-shaft is divided into sections 4, 4A, 4B, &c., and on each section is keyed a cage 6A, carrying pinions 8 mounted on studs. These pinions engage an annular wheel 9A forming part of a bevel-wheel, loosely mounted on the boss of the cage and driving a bevel-gear 10 from which the drum 1 receives its motion, and also with a pinion 11 keyed to the next section of the driving- shaft. If any particular drum is retarded, the pinions 8 will rotate and cause the pinion 11 and thus the succeeding drums to accelerate. Pawls 12 are inserted between the bevel-wheels and the cages to permit relative motion in one direction only and thus ensure that, if the resistance to any particular drum ceases, that drum will not run at increased speed and the succeeding drums remain stationary.
