Steering.-Relates to irreversible screw-and-nut steering-mechanism for automobiles and for analogous purposes, such as for motor-boats and airships, the gear being of the kind in which a direct connexion is obtained between a fixed point on the frame and the steering-wheels. In the arrangement shown applied to an automobile in Fig. 1, and in the enlarged sectional view, Fig. 3, motion is transmitted from the spindle 26, mounted on the dash-board, through chain gearing to a sprocketwheel 31 mounted on a spindle 17 carried in a bracket secured to the frame of the vehicle. The connexion between the spindle 17 and arm 6 attached to one of the swivelling axles comprises an extensible rod made in two parts, a nut 8, and a screw 10. The nut 8 is formed integral with, and is completely enclosed by, an oil-tight casing 9 attached at one end by a universal joint to the spindle 17, the screw 10 being formed on the end of a rod 12 connected to the arm 6. The nut and screw are made of equal length. In a modification, the steering-column acts directly on the spindle 17 through skew or bevel gearing.
