Bearings and courses, determining ; compasses, magnetic.-Fig. 1 shows in section magnetic-compass apparatus attached to the frame of a bicycle for the purpose of enabling the cyclist at any time by inspection of the compass card to determine approximately the general magnetic bearing of the roads just passed over, that is the magnetic bearing of an imaginary straight line drawn from the starting point to the point where the observation is made. This is effected by judging the centre of density of markings made periodically by the dropping of potassium permanganate or like drop by drop on to the edge of a compass card C from a reservoir B. The bearing thus determined can be compared with that of the straight line between the starting and destination points for the purpose of determining the route.
