10,431. Cockburn, J. G. May 3. Colour scales.-A device for indicating the intensities of shading to be used in drawing, and the colours to be used in painting, consists of a card pierced, for example, with four holes a. Against the sides of two of the holes are patches b of shading, varying in intensity and numbered to facilitate reference. The model is viewed through one of the holes and the card is turned about until a shade is found which corresponds with that of the visible part of the model. The reference numerals may be marked on the drawing before the shading is commenced. The two remaining holes in the card, or holes in a second card, are surrounded with patches of colour each provided with a reference number or letter and the name of the pigment used; or the names may be obtained from a separate list. The colours required in painting are obtained in the same manner as the shading.
