28,952. Eastern Telegraph Co., Fraser, A., and Wood, K. L. Dec. 16. Clutches, friction; operating clutches.-A clutch h comprises a cone 3 secured to the shaft a and a cone 4 loose on the shaft and having helical surfaces on its boss bearing against similar surfaces on the loose driven sleeve e, which bears also against a collar 5 on the shaft. A spring 7 tends to rotate the sleeve relatively to the cone 4 to force the cone into engagement with the cone 3 and the sleeve into engagement with the collar 5. A detent 10 normally lying in the path of the projection 11 on the cone 4 and a spring 8 engaging a cam z on the sleeve e hold the cone 4 and sleeve e against relative rotation and keep the clutch disengaged until the detent 10 is removed by electro-magnetic means. During rotation, a cam 1 depresses a catch lever 19 to permit the detent 10 to return and disengage the clutch at the end of one revolution. The clutch j comprises a grooved disk 41, and a block 45 which is pivotally mounted on an arm 42 carried on an eccentric on the part g. The detent 27 normally prevents the arm 42 from turning under the action of its spring so as to bring the block 45 into engagement with the disk 41, but when the detent is removed and the part g begins to rotate, the arm 42 is turned to produce a closer contact between the clutch block and the disk.
