Process for Defecating Raw Cane Sugar or Cane Sugar Solutions.

Purifying saccharine liquids; refining sugar. -Cane sugar or syrup is mixed with lime and introduced into water or juice simultaneously with carbon dioxide or flue gases, and neutralization is completed by phosphoric, sulphurous, or other acid. In treating raw sugar, the sugar may be made into a magma with water in a mixer A having toothed disks F upon two shafts s and scrapers or distancepieces t, and lime (preferably caustic, although slaked lime or milk of lime may be used) is fed in by a vibrating screen C. The magma overflows by a trough c or is run by a pipe f into one of a number of defecators E containing water, and the stirrers i are at once started and carbon dioxide &c. is introduced through pipes l. An acid is added to complete the neutralization. or nearly so, and the solution is heated by a coil k and filtered. The raw sugar may be washed first, and the resulting sugar and syrup separately treated as above. Other cane syrup can be similarly treated. At the plantation factory, the second and third products are made into a magma with the raw cold juice and lime, and run into juice in the defecators, and the green syrup is limed and also run into juice.
