112,205. Green, F. W. March 19, 1917. Teaching signalling; code-signalling mechanism ; semaphore signals.-An apparatus for teaching signalling in Morse or other codes comprises a miniature flag which is caused to wave by handoperated mechanism employing separate cards or plates provided with slots or serrations, the length or frequency of which determine the message sent. The slotted cards 4, Fig. 3, are supported on a plate 2 pressed upwards by a spring 9, and are moved outwardly by a roller 7 frictionally rotated by a hand-operated roller 6. An adjustable plate 8 ensures that only the top card moves. A light frame 13 pivoted at one end 14 and supported towards its other end by a wheel 16 carries a shaft 12 on which is mounted a disk 17, cut away as shown, and the flag 11. The wheel 16 drops into the slots in the cards 4 or rides over the spaces between them, in so doing lowering the frame 13 to bring the disk 17 into contact with the roller 7 or raising it to bring the disk into contact with the roller 6. This oscillates the flag one way or the other to amounts determined by the length of the slot and limited by the cut-away part on the disk 17 and by a stop 20. The shaft 12 is counterweighted and preferably is mounted in slots and spring-pressed towards the rollers 6, 7. In a modified form, where the cards 4 are too thin to allow adequate fall of the frame 13, the wheel 16 is arranged beyond the plate 8, which has a slotted ledge to support the card. In a simpler form of apparatus, shown in Fig. 6, the cards 4 are pressed downwardly, and the bottom card is moved outwardly by a roller 24, the spaces in the cards directly engaging a cut-away disk 29 on the flag-carrying shaft, which is mounted in slots and spring-pressed upwardly. Fig. 7 shows a modified form of the apparatus shown in Fig. 6, the cards 4 being pressed upwardly and the roller 34 being made in two parts, one bearing on the card on each side of the line of slots. A spring returns the flag 11 and a spring arm riding up an inclined surface damps this return movement and minimizes clicking noises. Instead of a flag, any other form of indicator may be operated, visual or audible.
