Converting alternating and direct currents. - A constantpotential direct current is obtained by rectifying an alternating current and delivering the rectified current through a series impedance to a load circuit shunted by a second impedance, the series and shunt impedances offering respectively a high and a low impedance to the alternating components of the current. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, the current from an alternator 1 is rectified by incandescent cathode tubes 11, 12 and supplied to a condenser 7, a transformer 2 being employed to transform the current to any desired voltage. The load 8 is connected to the terminals of the condenser 7 through an inductance 9 which offers a high impedance to the alternating components and a low impedance to the direct component of the current obtained from the condenser. A second condenser 10, which offers a low impedance to the alternating components, is placed in shunt with the load. Additional shunt circuits tuned to the frequency of the source 1 and to one or more of its harmonics may be employed as shown in Fig. 3.
