Improvements in and relating to the treatment of ramie, flax, hemp and like plants for the production of fibre ready for spinning

Breaking and scutching apparatus; decorticating ramie, &c,-Flax, ramie &c. already treated in a water tank 1, Fig. 1, is placed on a tilting table 8 whence it is discharged on to a large flat bed 2 of stone, metal, concrete, &c., upon which run one or more heavy crushing-rollers 4, water jets 5 meanwhile playing on the material. From the flat bed 2 the material is passed through rollers 6 which press out the liquid &c., and then between fluted rolls f. In a modification, crushing-rollers 10, 11, Fig. 3, are arranged on a rotating head moving over a circular bed 2 upon which the material is placed. The rollers 10, 11 may have varying diameters and weights, and some of them may be fluted or formed with projections. Water is constantly supplied to the bed 2 and is drawn off by valves &c. Small wagons X, W running on circular tracks are used to carry the material to the bed 2 and from the bed 2 to rollers 6, f.
