Tapering and reducing size by chemical action. -The cutting edges of safety and other razor blades or cutting instruments are sharpened by being rubbed upon or by a glass &c. surface carrying a film of dilute acid, e.g. nitric acid. Conveniently, a small portion of an acid salt which forms a suitable liquid on the addition of a little water is placed on the surface and the edge of the blade rubbed gently three or four times over the coated surface. The blade or surface or both may be mechanically operated.
