Density apparatus.-Oxygen and nitrogen are separated from a mixture in a centrifugal machine, and while subjected to centrifugal action they are cooled and subjected to the action of a rotating non-uniform magnetic field. The mixture enters the machine by the pipe 6 and passes through the centrifugal blower 2 driven by the electric motor 1. A hollow ring 4, filled with liquid air, carries electro-magnets 41 and rotates with the blower. A similar ring 10 with electromagnets 101 is attached to the hollow shaft 9 of a centripetal pump 8 driven by an electro-motor 11. Under the combined influence of centrifugal force and the magnetic field, oxygen is thrown outwards and carried along the ring 4, while nitrogen passes into the pump 8 through the hollow shaft 9 to the outlet 13. The oxygen passes across the magnetic field along the ring 4 and then along the ring 10. Some of the oxygen liquefies and is drawn off :'rom the outlet 121 and the remaining gas from the outlet 12. In order to permit the oxygen to leave the ring 4 and pass to the ring 10, the current in the electro-magnets is periodically interrupted, and at the same time the valves 14, 15 are partially or wholly closed. Instead of using revolving magnets, fixed magnets may be used supplied with polyphase current to give a rotating field.
