Producers.-In apparatus in which coal gas retorts and a gas producer are combined so that the water gas is mixed with the coal gas, the water gas is passed through a distributing chamber and thence through the retorts, the distributing chamber being shut off from the generator during the blow to enable coal gas to pass from the retorts to the hydraulic main. During the blow, the producer gas is passed by a flue J up central chambers K, M filled with chequer bricks, around the retorts B and down side regenerators, finally being taken to steam boilers. During the run, the water gas follows a similar path and after heating the boilers passes to the distributing chamber N from which it passes by flue n1 and enters openings b1 in the retorts, the mixed gases being led from the other end of the retorts by ascension pipes G to the hydraulic main E, oil being injected into the chamber K by a nozzle k' and on to the fuel bed of the gas producer. In a modification without oil supplies, a producer adapted for up and down runs is employed, the gases from the up run being passed around the retorts before passing through them and the, gases from the down run passing directly through the retorts.
