Plant.-To separate solid matter from solution or suspension in liquid, the liquid is heated in a jacketted precipitating chamber after regenerative heating in a three tube system by the liquid or vapour passing from the chamber and the gasos which have been used to heat the chamber. The heating temperature may be such as to sterilize or deodorize the residue. A suitable chemical or an allied product, such as a portion of the previously heated residue, may be added to assist precipitation. The method is particularly applicable to the treatment of waste products, such as skim milk, butter-milk or whey, from butter, cheese and like factories, and to other effluents. The liquid under treatment is forced by a steam injector or by a pump K through a pipe B and the outer tube C of the regenerative system to a jacket surrounding the engine A which drives the pump. From the jacket it passes through a pipe F1 and is sprayed into the precipitating chamber G. The chamber G may be heated by exhaust gases from the engine A which are passed through the surrounding jacket and discharged through the central pipe E of the regenerative system. Solid matter precipitated is removed by a screw conveyer G1. The heated liquor or vapour given off in the chamber G is discharged through the intermediate tube of the regenerative system, the discharge being aided by an air injector J.
