250,396. Rose, W.., and Rose Bros. (Gainsborough), Ltd. April 23, 1925. Sheet-separators; pile supports. - Sheets are separated from a. pile 3 contained in a magazine 1, which is adjustable vertically and horizontally, by means of a rotary knurled or grooved friction roller 15 carried by a rotating yoke 11, 17 driven by an electric or other motor. The shaft 13 of the roller 15 is fitted with a spur gear 14 which engages a fixed wheel 16, so that the roller 15 is driven by epicyclic gearing and rotates quickly to feed the bottom sheet past an adjustable plate 171 into engagement with sheet-forwarding devices such as positively driven rollers 20. 21. The sheets normally rest on ledges 4 attached to the magazine 1, and to prevent double feed a needle 27 of resilient material such as tempered spring-steel is arranged to pierce the bottom sheets of the pile. The needle 27, Fig. 7, is vertically adjustable by a screw 29 in a holder 28, and is clamped in adjusted position by a screw 30. The holder 28 is adjustable longitudinally relatively to a bracket 31 on the magazine 1 by means of a screw 34, and is clamped in adjusted position by means of a screw 35. The magazine 1 is mounted for adjustment as shown in Fig. 4. A tongue-shaped projection 41 on the magazine 1 engages a vertical groove in a crossmember 36, and is vertically adjustable by means of a screw 42 engaging a threaded opening in the member 36. To effect horizontal adjustment, the cross-member 36 is formed with a groove 37 which is engaged by a bar 39 secured to a fixed bracket 40, and the cross-member 36 is movable longitudinally on the bar 39 by means of a screw. A lock-nut 48 holds the member 36 in its adjusted position.
