289,382. National Cash Register Co., (Assignees of Shipley, B. M.). April 25, 1927, [Convention date]. Adding and subtracting apparatus.-An add-or-subtract totalizer is provided with automatic means obviating the addition of the fugitive one when taking a negative balance, the totalizer wheels when disengaged from their actuators always standing at the true complementary values. As in Specification 8119/15 the totalizer may consist of positive and negative pinions 30, 31 geared together by reversing bevel wheels and mounted on a shaft 34 shifted by the rocking of a shaft 60 so as to engage one or other series of pinions with the actuators 41. Echeloned on the shaft 60 is a number of arms 61 each adapted when the shaft is rocked, to wipe past a lever 62 pin-and-slot connected to a yoke member 63 loose on a rod 631. The yoke member has two arms 65, 66 each provided with a stud to bear on a cam 67, 68 secured respectively to the negative and positive totalizer pinions. To the yoke member is attached an arm 46 having a tooth to actuate a sleeve 45 carrying the bevel pinions 33 of the next higher order. Normally the totalizer pinions all stand at zero but when the totalizer is moved to engagement the arms 61 successively rock the yoke members against spring action and thus cause the sleeves 45 to move round to shift the pinions not in use back by one step, the pinions to be actuated meanwhile being held by the usual aligning plate 79. If nothing is entered in the totalizer the removal of the pinions from the actuators will result in the restoration of the shifted pinions, low parts of the cams 67, 68 permitting the yokes and therefore the sleeves 45 to return. If, however, a number is entered on any one of the pinions the cam attached thereto will prevent the return of its yoke member and consequently all the higher pinions will remain in their adjusted positions, so that the positive and negative pinions carry their true values. A bell is sounded whenever the totalizer changes sign, a hammer 96, Fig. 5, being then tripped by a lever 107 adapted to be rocked by one or other of two lugs 101, 102 carried by spur wheels geared with the positive and negative pinions of the highest denomination. The hammer is re-cocked by a hook 115 rigid with the indicator-aligning blade 112.
