Feeding openers, &c.-A hopper bale opener, hopper feeder, &c. having a vertical spiked lattice or a spiked wheel, dividing it into two compart.- ments is provided with a duct leading from the front to the rear compartment whereby dustladen air short circuits the lattice &c. and assists in providing an adequate air supply for a combined cage or fibre conveying means. A hopper feeder a comprises a spiked lifting lattice d, beater e for throwing off surplus fibre, and beater j for stripping the fibre from the lattice. Dustladen air in the hopper short circuits the lattice and beater e by a conduit h, and passes into the rear part b of the hopper on its way to a high speed dust cage g and air trunk g3, along which the liberated cotton is conveyed by clean air, as described in Specification 317,592, a fan i withdrawing dust-laden air along a conduit i2 from the cage g. To increase the draught through the machine, the beaters may be formed as fans, the draught assisting also to strip the fibre from the lattice d. In a modification, the conduit h is disposed outside the side of the hopper and reenters at the axis of the beater f which is formed as a mixed flow fan to draw in air axially and eject it radially. The two arrangements of the conduit may be combined.
