[Classes 50 and 55 (i).] The process of the parent Specification for heating coal or mixtures of coal and coke &c., in order to produce globular particles is modified by compressing the globular coal whilst still warm as it issues from the oven. The particles pass to a press 2 from a rotary oven 1 and the agglomerates are separated from waste on a grating 3, passing thence to an evacuating shoot or to an oven 5 if semi-coke or agglomerated coke is required. This oven may be similar to the first or may comprise a series of inclined heating chambers alternating with flat distillation ducts having outlets for the fractions distilled. The oven may be oscillated to cause the agglomerates to descend during coking at about 1000‹ C. For the production of semicoke with 10 per cent of volatiles, a temperature about 500‹ C. is employed and with 5 per cent, about 600‹ C., the oven being relatively steeply inclined. In the case of coal with high agglutinant power a preheating at 300‹ C. is desirable before the globules are coked.
