Improvements in or relating to a method of and mechanism for superimposing a sheet upon and attaching it to a selected book section or the like in a sheet pasting machine

PICT:0365882/III/1 In a sheet-pasting machine sheets or book sections are superimposed one on the other during the joint feed thereof, and adhesive is applied to the underface of an upwardly deflected portion of the superimposed sheet or section to connect the sheets together. The sheets are carried forward in superimposition to conveyer belts 22, 23 by which they are conveyed to the adhesive-applying device. The lower conveyer member 23 may comprise a belt which extends completely across the conveyer device, and the upper conveyer member may comprise two belts 22 between which is interposed a narrow longitudinal plate 27 adapted to support the inner lateral edge of the upper sheet b when the latter is superimposed on the lower sheet a. The member 27 extends from the feed-table to the adhesive-applying device to prevent the inner lateral edge of the sheet b during this part of its travel from lying upon the sheet a. The adhesive-applying device comprises a supply tank 24 into which projects a roller or wheel 25. The wheel 25 is rotated from the belts 22 by the provision of follower-wheels 26 which engage the belts and are mounted on a stub-shaft on which the wheel 25 is secured. A deflecting-wall or guide-member 27a secured to or forming part of the member 27 is arranged in front of the wheel 25 and is shaped so that the inner lateral edge of the sheet b is deflected in an p upward direction when approaching the wheel 25. The deflecting-wall 27a is framed with a masking-shield to mask the front half of the wheel 25 and only allow the upturned edge of the sheet b to contact with the back half of the wheel 25 so that the latter deposits adhesive as it is retreating from the upturned edge. During the further joint advance of the two sheets the inner lateral edge of the sheet b is pressed on the sheet a to secure both sheets together.
