[Class 135.] A liquid seal device for controlling the fuel supply to the carburetter of an internal-combustion engine and adapted to close automatically as soon as the engine prepares to stop, is interposed in the pipe line between the fuel tank and the carburetter. A pipe B connected to the fuel tank dips into mercury M in the bottom of a tank A and a connected bellows N. The space L below the bellows is connected by a pipe G to the induction pipe so that when the engine is running the bellows is expanded against the action of a spring o thus removing the mercury from the mouth of the tube B and allowing fuel to flow out through the pipe E. The bellows may be moved by a push rod U extending through a tube T. The device may be actuated by the pressure in the exhaust pipe or by the expansion of a gas or liquid exposed to the heat of the engine. In a modification the hand actuation is dispensed with and the actuating pressure acts directly on the surface of the mercury.
