In a modification of the process described in the parent Specification, the reduction is carried out with the exclusion of oxidizing gases such as air or combustion gases in an externally heated furnace sealed in a gaslight manner and constructed of alloys having a high resistance to heat, more particularly heat-resistant steels, or chromium-nickel or chromium-nickel-cobalt alloys, the reduced metal being tapped off from the furnace in a molten condition whilst the volatilized metal is condensed outside the furnace.
