[Class 118 (ii)] Means for measuring short time intervals in apparatus for determining distance by the echo method, comprises a mask 3 having a sloping edge 35 which is rotated by an electric motor 34, the time being indicated by the length of the neon tube 26 uncovered. A sound-wave is transmitted at zero time by contact 4 either closing contacts 1, 2 or moving close to a magnetic circuit. When the echo is received the tube 26 is flashed and the amount of tube uncovered indicates the time elapsed and hence the depth. Change-speed gear 51 enables the apparatus to be used for more than one range of depths. Magnet 29 may be energized when the tube 26 flashes so that a record of the depth is made on a moving tape 58. The magnet is raised or lowered by cam 62 and rod 63 when the change-gear lever 52 is operated so that the appropriate range scales on drum 54 are effective.
