513,566. Distilling hydrocarbons. HALTERMANN, J. Jan. 3, 1938, No. 144. Void. Convention date, Jan. 30, 1937. [Class 32] Aromatic hydrocarbons are recovered from their mixtures with aliphatic and hydroaromatic hydrocarbons by fractional distillation with the addition of organic compounds having a greater solvent power for aromatic hydrocarbons than for others. Suitable additions are methanol, ethanol, furfurol, pyridine bases and the like. In examples : (1) a benzine is mixed with an equal volume of furfurol and distilled, the aliphatic and hydro-aromatic hydrocarbons passing over with the furfurol, which separates out in the receiver and is returned to the retort. As soon as the furfurol no longer separates in the receiver, the distillation is stopped and the furfurol is separated from the aromatic hydrocarbon residue in the retort by distillation or by means of sodium bisulphite solution or ammonia. (2) A benzine is similarly separated by use of methanol or ethanol. (3) A benzine is separated by use of pyridine bases.
