532,795. Modifying magnetic field of ships as protection against mines. BARNES, F. G. Nov. 28, 1939, No. 31017. [Class 113 (i)] Ships are protected against mines of the magnetic type by surrounding or partly surrounding the ship by (1) a magnet; (2) an electromagnet; (3) a coil or coils of wire through which an electric current is passed. This equipment is designed either to neutralize or modify the magnetic field of the ship so as to result in either the mine not exploding or where the magnetic field has been increased, exploding at a safe distance from the ship. The arrangement shown comprises a steel bar 2, supported on the ship's side by brackets &c. 1, the bar being magnetized either permanently or by surrounding coils of wire connected up to the ship's dynamo, alternately a wire cable may be employed. The bar is partly enclosed by wire cables 3 designed to protect the ship against torpedo attack.
