Improvements in or relating to the production of text composition comprising or containing accented characters in record-strip-controlled single-typecasting and composing machines
538,829. Type-making machines. ELLIOTT, R. C., and MONOTYPE CORPORATION, Ltd. Nov. 15, 1939, No. 30125. [Class 100 (iii)] In means for casting accented characters in single-type composing and casting machines,. in which the accents are formed on separate type bodies of smaller point-size than the characters, two type-high mould-blades are arranged side by side in the mould, and separate and independent devices are provided for controlling the :setting of each of the blades for both of the point-sizes to be cast. The body parts BSP4/SP, B', Figs. 6, 7, 8 and 9, of the two blades B, BSP1/SP are of the full point-size of the mould-cavity, and that of the blade BSP1/SP rests on top of that of the blade B with capacity for relative movement. Each blade has a forward end BSP2/SP, BSP6/SP of full type-height, these two parts lying side by side, and each being, say, one-half the pointsize of the mould. The blade B is operated in the usual manner. The blade B' is either moved back with it to dimension the mould for the large size of body, when character-types are to be cast, or is held in the forward position, so that the mould-cavity is formed by the blade B alone, for casting accent-types. The blade B' is operated by mechanism, which is of known form for operating a cut-off blade for casting lowquads. This comprises a lever engaging the blade, and two pivoted actuators E, ESP1/SP, Fig. 11, which serve to move the blade in opposite directions. The actuator required is operated by a control-lever G, which is horizontally adjustable on a vertically rocking arm of the machine. The lever G is positioned by a doubleacting air-motor C, which is governed by two distinct signals in the record-strip. The motor adjusts a pivoted setting-member or switch H, which moves the control-lever into one or the other position of adjustment when the arm carrying the lever rises.
