555,376. Angular bending. STEPHEN & SONS, Ltd., A:. STEPHEN, J. G., and SCOTTISH MACHINE TOOL CORPORATION, Ltd. May 25, 1942, No. 7084. [Class 83 (iv)] A machine for bending angle &c. bars B and, if desired, altering the angle thereof, e.g. as described in Specification 415,884, comprises jaws 33 pivoted on an axle 17 which is mounted in horizontally slidable brackets 18 and carries a screw 35, Fig. 5, by which a workengaging abutment 36 can be adjusted, the jaws being closed and advanced, to the left, by arms 15 connected to a hydraulic ram 14. The work, comprising two bars B, is supported, on either side of the interchangeable gripping portions 34 of the jaws, by abutments 51, Fig. 2, carried by blocks 44 adapted to swivel freely in slides 46 adjustable along fixed guides 47 by screws 22. Pivoted in each block 44 are jaws 20 with heels 20a, Fig. 6, engaged in a hole 50 in the abutment 51 and this can be adjusted by a key 52 of the right thickness to cause the jaws to engage the work when the abutment is pressed in. Increased pressure by the work on the abutments 51 during bending causes the jaws 20 to grip the work firmly. Noses 33a, Fig. 1, of the jaws 33 engage behind flanges 19a of the work and, if the abutment 36 is adjusted so as not to engage the flanges 19 at first, the flanges 19a are given an angle greater than 90 degrees to the flanges 19 and then when the abutment 36 engages the flanges 19, the bar is bent as a whole. The movement of the ram 14 is controlled by valves in a chest 25 operated by a rod 26, lever 27, and handle 29, the movement in both directions being limited by adjustable stops 53, 54, on a rod 32 connected to the ram, engaging a loose sleeve 31 connected to the lever 27.
