566,222. Cutting sugar-cane &c. BOUDIKINE, N. July 2, 1943, No. 10798. [Class 6 (iii)] A machine for cutting comparatively thick or hard stems of plants, such as sugarcanes, sunflowers, maize and cotton plants, comprises a number of circular saws mounted in a low position and carried overlappingly side by side by a single arm extending laterally from the side of the vehicle. In the construction shown, the machine comprises a casing b supported on wheels d and housing a shaft f which, through bevel gears e1, e2, drives a series of overlapping circular cutting saws a. The casing is also supported by a number of spaced stirrup-like members r acting as protecting means for the saws against large stones, The casing is filled with oil and is fitted with plates i supporting the shaft f. A framework k, k1 extending rearwardly from the casing serves to strengthen it, and the member k1 of the framework carries a short spigot k2 adapted to abut against the vehicle against the pressure of a spring k3 when the casing is pressed back on meeting strong resistances. Curved plates l serve to guide stems at the extremities of the casing into the path of the saws. In a modification Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), the cutting mechanism incorporates two saws only, these being mounted in a casing of reduced depth and being driven at high speed through trains of gears.
