604,984. Switching systems for incandescent lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and WARHURST, F. Nov. 23, 1945, Nos. 31580/45 and 30092/46. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XVIII] A diagram for instructional and like purposes consists of one or more lamps or lamp chambers fixed to a plane surface, an overall translucent covering bearing a diagram, and control means including one or more electro-magnetic step-bystep switches arranged to be interconnected by jacks so as to give a plurality of lamp-illuminating sequences. As shown, a board 1 mounted on a horizontal platform 6 is provided with a plurality of holes 2 arranged in any desired configuration to suit a diagram or the like. In each hole is an electric lamp, the energizing wires for which are led down a cable duct 3 to a multiple switch strip 4. A co-operating switch strip 11 is mounted on a base 5, its wires being led through a duct 12 to a casing 9 containing an assembly of relays and switches of the uniselector type. The board 1 is covered with a sheet of translucent material displaying a diagram, lettering, pictures &c., the items of which are to be simultaneously or sequentially illuminated by the lamps when lit. The unit comprising the board 1 and platform 6 with strip 4 is detachably mounted on locating pins 7 on the base 5, and is readily replaceable by another unit displaying a different diagram, &c. Interconnecting plugs 10 pivoted to the strip 11 join the appropriate segments of the two strips 4, 11. In a modification, the board 1 carries a uniform field of lamps the selectability of which is determined by a replaceable jack strip unit placed between the strips 4 and 11, two sets of pivoted plugs 10 being provided one on each strip 4, 11. A different sheet of translucent material, one for each display, is removably mounted over the lamp board. In each form, the casing 9 contains a uniselector switch having a bank arranged to be connected directly to the display lamps 2, a further bank connected to relays arranged to illuminate one or more of the lamps, and another bank arranged to be connected to relays which modify the illumination of the lamps, i.e. to provide automatic stepping or a flickering action on one or more of the lamps; The stepping may be controlled either from the sequentiallyoperating relay group or from a hand-operated switch.
