[Class 97 (ii)] An electric lamp is mounted with a tight sliding fit in a hood k, which is fixed to the index arm c and apertured so that two small beams of light are directed on to the index b1 and vernier e respectively. The hood may be provided with an orange filter. The handle f of the sextant is formed as a trough-like casing with a flat lid on which the dry battery is mounted by spring blade contacts. The latter engage spring contacts in the casing with a snap action when the lid is placed in position, thus completing the circuit from the battery through a push-button switch q1 on the handle f, and leads j, j1 to the lamp.
