[Class 122 (iii)] [Also in Group XV] An oscillating cylinder steam or air engine comprises a cylinder 1 pivotally mounted on a fixed steam chest 11 and oscillated independently of the connecting rod 8 by means of a U-shaped guide member 2 fixed to the cylinder 1 and co-operating with an actuating member 6 mounted eccentrically on the engine crank disc 3. The piston-rod 4 is connected to the connecting-rod 8 through a cross-head 7 slidably mounted in the guide 2. The oscillating cylinder 1 covers and uncovers inlet and outlet ports 9, 91 and 10, 101 in the steam chest 11 before the piston reaches the end of its stroke, giving early intake and cut-off and early exhaust.
