[Class 39 (i)] The main electrodes of gasfilled discharge devices for A.C. operation comprise a cylindrical core 1, Fig. 2, of tungsten or molybdenum, coated with a layer 3 of magnesia or alumina, on which is wound a tungsten helix 4, the inner end of which is welded to the inner end of the core, and which is coated with activating material preferably filling the spaces between the turns. The wire forming the helix is so fine that the current flowing therethrough during full operation of the device, in conjunction with the heat received directly from the discharge is sufficient to heat the electrode to high emission temperature. The activating coating is preferably very thin and may be formed by dipping the electrode in a paste containing 50 parts barium carbonate, 30 parts strontium carbonate and 20 parts of calcium carbonate, 10 parts of the barium and strontium carbonates being in colloidal form. The electrode is formed by heating in vacuum at 1000-1100‹C., using an electrode 12 as anode in the processing. An external resonating circuit comprising a condenser and choke is connected between the free ends of the helices of each main electrode.
