Class 124 A feeding mechanism for rock drills comprises a feed cylinder, a piston in the cylinder on which the cylinder is movable, a piston rod on the piston and a ground engaging foot on the piston rod, means for supporting a rock drill on the cylinder, a pressure reducing valve on the cylinder, and means for venting pressure air from the cylinder. As shown, a rock drill 5 is bolted to a cylinder 1 open at one end through which passes a piston rod 4 carrying a piston 3. A ground engaging foot is fitted to the piston rod at the end opposite to the piston. The cylinder, which is closed by a plug 2 at the other end is moved relative to the piston by a pressure fluid, e.g. compressed air, which is admitted to the space between the piston and the plug through a pressure reducing valve 9 which may be formed partly as a handle situated near the open end of the cylinder and may be of the type described in Specification 710,558. Manual pressure on a knob 41 opens a spring- loaded ball valve and allows pressure fluid in the cylinder to escape to atmosphere.
