Class 38 (v) A glow discharge switch for starting a fluorescent lamp 7 operating on a D.C. supply 1, 2, comprises a pair of fixed electrodes 13, 21 carrying respectively V-shaped bimetal strips 11, 19 reversely arranged and having free ends 22, 12 which move, when heated by the glow discharge to engage, respectively, the electrodes 21, 13. The free ends 12, 22 are bent away from their co-operating fixed electrodes, and the latter are connected through leads 15, 17 to a conventional starting circuit comprising choke coils 4, 5 and a resistance 3.
