In columnar apparatus for treating liquids with gases or steam comprising a series of superposed plates with common passages for gas and liquid therethrough, each plate is divided into two or more zones in each of which the passages are shaped at an inclination to that of adjacent gases and so as to cause the issuing gas to impart a motion to the superincumbent liquid tangential with respect to the plate axis and radially inwardly or outwardly according to the indication of the passages. Surplus liquid may descend the column through downtakes alternately at the centre and periphery of successive plates. In a plate divided into eight zones a ... h with passages arranged in parallel rows as indicated in Fig. 5, the gas flow C in zones b ... f and h is towards the centre of the plate and a liquid flow in this direction is imparted. In the arrangement of Fig. 6 the radial component is suppressed and a rotary motion with high angular momentum is induced. Expanded or corrugated metal plates may be employed with bent portions adjacent the apertures 22 ; arrows G, L indicate the flow of gas and liquid respectively.
