Class 51(ii) In a combined rotary and tilting furnace for the melting of metals, the furnace 1 is disposed on driven rollers 3 on a segmental cradle member 2 formed with a platform 10 on which is disposed a carriage 11 carrying a burner 7, and a telescopic air ducting 8 connects said burner and a fixed air pipe 9 co-axial with the axis of the cradle 2 to allow for the longitudinal tilting movements of the furnace on rollers 6. Intermittent teeming of the molten metal may be arranged for by providing a discharge spout 20, Fig. 3 partially encircling the furnace wall 21, whereby on rotation of the furnace in a clockwise direction at each revolution a volume of metal is discharged equivalent to the capacity of the spout. Rotation in an anti-clockwise direction results in the alternate filling and draining of the spout from the furnace without discharge externally thereof. Slag may be teemed off through the end of the furnace without stopping rotation and by rocking the furnace additional mixing of the contents is ensured. In a modified furnace Fig. 2 (not shown) the burner is not mounted on a carriage but is suspended on a chain passing over fixed pulleys and carrying a counterweight.
