717,801. Centrifugal governors; pistons. WESTINGHOUSE BREMSEN-GES. Aug. 26, 1952 [Oct. 1, 1951], No. 21429/52. Classes 57 and 122(1) A centrifugal governor is loaded by a pneumatic force and the force transmitted to the governor sleeve automatically increases as the speed of the governor increases. Fig. 1 shows the governor sleeve 5 pivoted to a lever 6 loaded by pneumatic pressure acting on a piston 11; the lever fulcrum comprises a curved surface 8 so that the transmission ratio of the lever varies upon movement of the governor sleeve. Fig. 2 shows an arrangement in which the piston is in the form of a conical diaphragm 14 which bears against a conical surface 15 and also against a part carried by the governor sleeve. According to the position of the governor sleeve, the area of the diaphragm that engages the surface 15, and is therefore inactive, is varied. An adjustable throttle 13 may be provided in the air supply to provide damping.
