734,385. Pipe joints; jointing tools. ETERNIT, [formerly SOC. PER AZIONI ETERNIT PIETRA ARTIFICIALE]. May 8, 1953 [Dec. 12, 1952], No. 12860/53. Class 99 (1). In a joint for asbestos cement pipes of the kind in which a U-section sealing ring 10 is located between a pipe 2 and a sleeve or socket 1, the flexible inner lip 11 of the ring is pressed by pipeline pressure into a rebate 24 formed in the end of the pipe. One sealing ring is employed in a bell-and-spigot joint. In the sleeve joint, as shown, a ring for each pipe is sprung into an annular recess 23. The sleeve may be in one piece, but to facilitate the assembly one of the rings may have a separate end portion 17 which screws into the main sleeve to confine the ring. The rings may be integrally connected between their outer limbs to form a resilient sleeve bridging the joint. The rings are first mounted in the sleeve, the pipe ends being tapered to facilitate assembly. A removable wooden guide 27, Fig. 8, may also be placed in the tube end 2. The tubes and sleeve are manipulated during assembly by a chain-type gripper. Grooves 9 in the pipes register with the sleeve ends to indicate the proper location of the sealing rings.
