In a locomotive tender carrying a fuel bunker 1, a water storage tank 9 behind the bunker and an air cooled condensing system for condensing locomotive exhaust steam, fans 5 for drawing cooling air through the system are mounted above the tank 9 and are driven by a turbine 3 which is supplied with locomotive exhaust steam and is located beneath the tender body. As shown the turbine 3 is bevel gear connected to a vertical shaft 4 passing through the tank 9 to drive directly the middle fan 5 and indirectly the other fans 5. The exhaust steam piping (not shown) of the turbine 3 has two vertical branches each branching fore and aft into lateral condensing elements 2 of the system. Condensate from the elements 2 passes into a collecting tank 8 from which it is passed into a feed pipe (not shown) from the tank 9 to the locomotive.
