747,549. Gasifying solid fuels. METALLGES. AKT.-GES. Sept. 6, 1954 [Nov. 9, 1953]. No. 25831/54. Class 55(1). In a process of gasifying solid fuels by means of oxygen or air enriched with oxygen and steam under pressure a part stream of the crude gas produced is led off'and partly or entirely combusted with oxygen under pressure, to raise its temperature to between 800-1200‹C., liquid hydrocarbons, e.g. tar or petroleum residues are then injected into and cracked by the highly heated gas stream thus forming a stream of gas containing gaseous hydrocarbons which is mixed with the remaining stream of crude gas to raise the calorific value of the gas as a whole. Heat exchange may be arranged between the gases entering and leaving the liquid hydrocarbon cracking zone and catalysts, e.g. one containing one or more metals of the iron group, may be employed in the cracking to counteract the formation of free hydrogen during the cracking. Steam may be added to the part stream and the cracking may be carried out in such a way that liquid hydrocarbons such as benzene are produced.
