Class 120(2) In order to wind back from a filled to an empty bobbin mounted in a spinning position a "tag end" of yarn, the lower flange of the empty bobbin has a shoulder on its upper side to catch the yarn during winding back, the yarn being led over a stationary guide so as to be wound below the shoulder. In one embodiment, yarn from a bobbin 18 is wound over a guide 28 and, after being caught by a notch 30 of the rotating bobbin, is wrapped within the space 26 beneath the bobbin formed by the interposition of a washer 24. When the yarn has been severed, the end trailing outwards from the space 26 is caused to strike a stationary post which tightens the turns of yarn round the washer 24. Instead of such a post, pins may be mounted on the bobbin carrier 14 to project into the annular space and prevent wound yarn from being thrown outwardly. The washer 24 may be replaced by a spigot attached either to the bobbin or to the carrier 14. Alternatively, the base of the bobbin may be recessed or grooves may be formed in the base as described in Specification 804,793. The grooves may be so deep as to pass through the peripheral wall of the base.
