770,443. Folding edges of sheet material. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. (United Shoe Machinery Corpora. tion). March 24, 1955 [March 27, 1954], No. 9015/54. Class 42 (1). A machine for folding marginal portions of an insole cover 56 around a margin of a ribbed insole I has a folding finger 74 movable up and down to fold successive portions of the cover margin upwardly against the edge of the insole, means for thereafter pressing those portions against the rib and the insole margin, a guide foot 22 arranged to engage the rib 42 and position the insole in the machine, means for feeding successive portions of the insole and cover past finger 74 and means enabling finger 74 to yield in a direction away from guide foot 22 so as to enable it to accommodate its position to suit insoles having margins of varying widths; for the same reason a plough 60, for deflecting the cover margin upwardly as it approaches finger 74, is also yieldably mounted. Guide foot. Guide foot 22 is shaped to support the inside of rib 42 and is mounted on a slidable stem 24, Fig. 4. The stem and foot are spring- urged downwardly, the downward movement being limited by a stop screw 32. Folding finger. Finger 74 is carried by a lever 76 pivoted on an adjustable eccentric pivot. 78, Fig. 2. Lever 76 is oscillated up and down by a pin 82 on the end of a shaft 84 entering a cylindrical block 83 journalled in lever 76. Finger 74 is rockable on a pivot 86 in lever 76 and is urged yieldably towards the insole edge by a spring 88; in the normal position of the finger, an extension 94 bears against the upper surface of lever 76. Hammer and anvil.-The work is fed intermittently by a hammer 96 and anvil 98 rocking on a shaft 110, Fig. 2. The hammer is closed on to the anvil by means of a lever 114 pivoted at 118 to a sliding block 116 reciprocated by a rod 120. The hammer is shaped at 132 to hold the rib 42 against the face 134 of guide foot 22 and to ensure that the cover is thrust well into the angle between rib 42 and the insole margin. During the return movement of the hammer and anvil, the work is held against guide foot 22 by an intermittently-moved gripper 99. Plough.-Plough 60 is pivoted at 64, Fig. 5, to the work-table 65, Figs. 2 and 4, and is yieldable away from the guide foot, against the action of a spring 71, to permit a wider part of the insole margin 44 to pass between the plough and the guide foot. Specification 544,010 is re-ferred to.
