[Also in Group XVI] In a method of measuring the circumference of a yielding rod-shaped object such as a cigarette 4 by rolling the cigarette over inked type to print a graduated marking 5 round its periphery, the marking comprises a measuring scale and a vernier scale printed from type 2, 3. Apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a frame 41 with rails 52 in side walls 42 for guiding a slide 53 with scales 60, 61 set in a recess 59. The cigarette 63 is placed on a foam pad 45 and the slide 53 is pushed to the left so that an inked roller 51 inks the scales 60, 61 before they roll over the cigarette 63. In another apparatus a foam-lined slide rolls the cigarette over the scales. Various scales are described and in one arrangement the vernier scale may be set relative to the measuring scale by an adjusting screw, Fig. 6 (not shown), to preset the apparatus for a prescribed size of cigarette. The space between the pad and the scales, accommodating the cigarette, may be made adjustable preferably by using an inclined plane, Fig. 12 (not shown). The scales may be inked by a pad pivoted for moving to and from inking position, Fig. 9 (not shown).
