Cleaning of an open hearth furnace slag pocket is facilitated by air pipes disposed along the floor and opening to the atmosphere outside the slag pocket, whereby cool air drawn into said slag pocket by the furnace draught during operation prevents the slag solidifying into a large mass. In a modification, Fig. 3, porous water pipes 10 are laid along the floor and covered with a layer 15 of lime, magnesium oxide or dolomite. Vertical and horizontal channels 8 and 9 are respectively formed in a layer 7 of the above oxides covering the side walls and floor of the slag pocket. After operation of the furnace water supplied through pipes 10 and sprinkled from above into channels 8 and 9 causes the oxides to form hydroxides with consequent swelling which breaks up the slag mass.
