Dust generated during the discharge of a horizontal coke oven 4, Fig. 1, between vertical side walls 5, Fig. 2, of a coke guide 3 is withdrawn through a hood 8 secured to and surmounting the guide 3 and connected by a duct 11 to a dust extractor 17 running along the battery of ovens 2 and to a draw-off stack 19. The guide 3 is mounted on rollers 6 for horizontal movement to and from the oven mouth ; the rear wall 14 of the hood 8 in its withdrawn position occupying the broken line position shown. The separator 17 comprises conventional baffles 18 or may be of the cyclone type.
