A method of printing a web A of a material such as fabric in repeat lengths by means of a stencil S1 comprises applying the stencil in a frame S to the web as it moved continuously and at a constant speed in its longitudinal direction, moving a scraper, wiper blade, or squeegee R transversely across the stencil to effect printing, moving the stencil away from the web, displacing it in the direction opposite to the direction of movement of the web, and re-applying the stencil to the web in correct register with the previously printed design. The stencil may be moved rearwardly at the same speed as the web moves longitudinally and in this event it is moved rearwardly half a repeat length at a time. The web may be secured to a backing sheet and conveyed by an endless band. One guide rail may be constructed as an endless conveyer for the web while a parallel guide rail moves in the opposite direction and forms a cable for the stencil which is adjustably mounted in a carriage. The stencil S1 is movable within the frame S to obtain the proper alignment for printing and may be exchanged for a further stencil. A plurality of stencils which operate simultaneously or in sequence may be employed.
